He attended a rural school near White Lake, South Dakota and then graduated from White Lake High School in 1960. Eldon enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1961 to 1965. He was a refueling specialist and served in Texas, Alaska, and South Carolina.
After his discharge in 1965, Eldon attended South Dakota State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and agriculture business in 1968. He then worked for the Production Credit Association in Winner, South Dakota and began his career in ag finance. It was there that Eldon was united in marriage on June 20, 1970, to Lela “Jane” Jerred at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. They were blessed with two children, Philip and Melanie.
In 1971, Eldon and Jane moved to Norfolk, Nebraska where he worked for the Norfolk Production Credit Association until 1985 and served as president of the association from 1975 to 1985. He then went to work for his good friends Roger and Donna Herrick at their seed business near Battle Creek, Nebraska, which later became Producer’s Hybrids.
In 1996, Eldon joined the Bank of Madison where he was again involved mostly with farm loans. In 2005, Eldon took a job at Elkhorn Valley Bank in Pierce, Nebraska and continued working primarily with farmers until he retired from full-time banking in 2009. He loved agriculture and continued working part time with farmers at Frontier Bank in Madison, Nebraska until the early spring of 2024. He also enjoyed helping Dan and Nancy Scheer of Madison with their family farm operation during the summer.
Eldon was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and volunteered for various parish functions. He served on the Northeast Community College Foundation Board as well as the Elkhorn Rural Public Power District Community Fund. Other areas in which Eldon volunteered included the Orphan Grain Train, St. Vincent DePaul, and Knights of Columbus.
