The air in Albion on Friday morning was thick with the mugginess that turned the first weekend of September into a dangerous affair for cross country runners.

Heat indexes rose to touch the 100-degree mark by the event’s end as fans were treated to a showdown — not just one for the early season but an early look of just how competitive the Boone Central district is going to be.

“The top four teams in our district, they’re all within ten points of each other,” coach Jonah Heng said. “It’s going to be a very competitive conference, very competitive districts with those same teams and additional ones.”

For first place in the boys race, it was down to just a single point. Battle Creek’s boys took second place in the invite, beating Norfolk Catholic and Nebraska Christian while falling to Wayne by the slimmest of margins.

Miles Clausen took second place to lead the Braves, still managing to break 18 minutes despite the high temperatures.

Myles Allen crossed in seventh place at 18:23, Eli Anderson placed 14th at 19:05 and Zayden Thramer
